LE GRIFFON, a supernatural love story by Sterling Houston, premiered at Jump-Start Theater in 2000 and was directed by Steve Bailey.  Set in New Orleans between 1803 and 1810, LE GRIFFON reframes the Frankenstein story.  A “monster” is created by a white doctor from the parts of deceased African American men who had been enslaved.  The play is a literal and metaphorical deconstruction of race.  Like the original Frankenstein, the plot follows the awakening and eventual demise of the creature, but through a lens of Blackness, slavery and struggle for freedom.  The play, again directed by Steve Bailey, is being revived for the city-wide Sterling Houston Festival.
